Design Rationale

The brief: a unified series design of 19 Modern History titles. The catch: budget constraints = no expensive cover photos allowed. The design pitch: Studying history is all about discovery, analysis and investigation. Let’s turn the constraints into a learning experience. An iconic cover illustration was crafted to allude to a key moment in time (the drawing style unifies the myriad of series topics). The gatefold unlocks the meaning of the image with supporting historical material (photograph, blurb, profiles, illustrated timeline, quote). A clean design allows for tense topics to be treated with a sense of authority, respect and gravitas.
