The 1996 Hall of Fame Award was awarded to Arthur Stokes. Arthur Stokes was the typographer and craftsman at the Wilkie printing house in the 1960s, and Halstead Press in the 1970s. He designed books for publishers for several decades, as well as teaching design and typography at the Caulfield Institute of Technology.
He learned his craft in England in the 1950s and he can be said to have taught and influenced a generation of Australian publishers and designers.
His work has been described by designer Alison Forbes as ‘very quiet, very considered, very good’.
