Meet Your Judges — The Australian Book Design Awards 2022

The ABDA committee is pleased to announce the judges for the 2022 awards. We’re excited to have a panel of judges this year who have experience across a range of disciplines in addition to book design, including graphic design, art direction, fine art, publishing and academia.

ALLISON COLPOYS is a multi award-winning designer and illustrator based in Naarm/Melbourne. She has previously worked at Scribe Publications as a designer and art director, and Penguin Books Australia as a senior designer. Allison is represented by the Jacky Winter Group for illustration.

ADAM CRUICKSHANK is an artist and designer who teaches publication design at various universities. He has exhibited widely, including as part of MUMA’s Bookworks and the State Library of Victoria’s Self-Made: zines and artist books. He attended the Bibliotheque Kandinsky’s fifth l’Université d’été in 2018, and is completing a PhD about publishing for exhibitions. He has art directed publications for numerous commercial publishers, including the BBC, Bauer and Fairfax in London, Sydney and Melbourne. Occasionally he organises the small, informal publishing imprint True Belief.

JANET HANSEN is an art director at Alfred A. Knopf and a multidisciplinary graphic designer working with additional clients such as New Directions, A Public Space, and Plan Architecture. She also teaches designing with type at the School of Visual Arts. She currently lives in a little old house in Montclair, New Jersey with her husband, daughter, and two whippets.

NINA HERYANTO is a Melbourne-based designer with over a decade of experience in the Australian publishing industry. She is a former Vice President of ABDA and is currently the Senior Concept Designer at Oxford University Press, where she collaborates with primary, secondary and tertiary education publishing teams on developing content from a visual communication perspective.

DIRK HISCOCK is a Senior Designer at the National Gallery of Victoria. His work is materially driven with a keen interest in the exploration and experimentation of emerging production techniques. Working within arts publishing he greatly enjoys opportunities to collaborate with living artists, and endeavours to produce considered publications which exist to champion this work.

MATT HOY has a background in visual arts and design during which time he was also a bookseller. It was bookselling that led him into publishing. Over the past 25 years, he has held various sales and marketing roles at Allen & Unwin, Hachette and Murdoch Books, as well as time as a designer at Allen & Unwin. His keen eye for visual communication, combined with his market knowledge have enabled him to guide the design process for thousands of books over his career. Matt is currently the Group Sales Director at Allen & Unwin and Murdoch Books.

MICHAEL LUGMAYR Co-founded ‘Design by Toko’ in partnership with Eva Dijkstra in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in 2001, and was elected a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale in 2016. Michael’s work has been published in numerous design books and magazines the world over and he actively engages in the creative community, regularly lecturing at universities and design conferences. He established Gallery by Toko presenting art and design exhibitions, book launches and industry talks all sharing a clear curatorial vision dominated by his urge to explore the parallels and boundaries between art and design. He advocates authenticity and vigorously pursues his life motto ‘live a little’.

FABIO ONGARATO is Co-Founder and Creative Director of Fabio Ongarato Design. For over 25 years, Fabio Ongarato has cultivated a culture of collaboration within his studio, creating impactful and lasting design outcomes that demonstrate the studio’s multi-disciplinary practice and holistic ethos. Fabio’s approach to design involves a deep consideration of context and environment, drawing on his passion for contemporary art practice to embed substance and culture into projects. Under Fabio’s creative leadership, the studio has achieved worldwide recognition for its design excellence, receiving AGDA’s Pinnacle Studio of the Year award in 2017.

MIKA TABATA is a freelance book designer who began her publishing career in 2014 working in-house at Walker Books Australia and now Production Designer at Allen & Unwin. She loves to work across a wide range of projects and will enter any book store or library she passes by. In 2021, she was awarded the Penguin Random House Deb Brash Emerging Designer of the Year.
