I loved Sean O’Beirne’s stories. I wanted to find an image that had the right mix of urban desolation and looming apocalypse, but with a touch of absurdist humour in there too. It wasn’t easy. I’ve admired Trent Parke’s photography for many years and it is a delight to be able to use his image (and its dark twin on the back). The typography needed to signal that the work was contemporary and offbeat, but not look at all glossy or styled, because the people of the book live in harsh worlds not touched by design.
