Leila Jeffreys’ feathered subjects may seem quite at home inhabiting the pages of a book – but in designing Birdland, my hope was to remain faithful to how Leila originally intended her images to be viewed – as large-scale artworks in a gallery context. She is first and foremost an exhibiting artist. Like the walls of a gallery, the white space and stacked caption typography serves as a neutral framework in which the artwork can breathe and be focussed on. The full-bleed section openers offer a glimpse at the level of detail present in Leila’s images at their intended scale.
