Biography of a famous Australian artist presented as a substantial work and an appealing object. DESIGN: The chronological narrative is marked by chapter openers featuring photos from personal albums. Images from sketchbooks were embedded regularly throughout the text pages. Three colour sections show how his work and self-image changed across time. (I was picture researcher and editor on the sketchbooks.) One intent was to provide a parallel visual narrative, an evolving sense of the artist’s life using the dozens of sketchbooks, never before published. The case was printed with a reproduction from a very characteristic painting.
