In this book, Colette in effect takes us on a literary travelogue through France. Photographs were sourced from libraries and collections in France and blended with the author’s contemporary photographs of French landscapes. We wanted the book to feel like a personal scrapbook of a life so mementos, theatre posters and other ephemera were used in a decorative style – floral borders etc which pick up on the importance of nature in Colette’s writing. The design work was complex in order to utilise the wide variety of illustrative material which was appropriate in a life which Colette herself continually reinvented.
