The third instalment in the Jackie French/Bruce Whatley natural disaster series, the design of Cyclone went somewhat off brief compared to Flood and Fire. Abandoning natural, hand-drawn fonts in favour of retro typewriter typography reminiscent of telex machines used during the disaster, the reader is instantly transported back to the 1970s. This font also leant itself to being scattered like debris across the pages in varying degrees of irregularity, building to a crescendo of complete mayhem and chaos. Combined with an industrial title treatment, lush thick paper stock and wood-free endpapers, Cyclone is an earthy, well-considered and powerful package.
