About the Designer

Sandy has been designing books for more than 20 years. In 2004 and 2005, she won the Best Designed Book of the Year at the Book Design Awards. In 2011 she was the 7th person to be inducted into the Australian Book Design Hall of Fame. Design Rationale

Referencing earthy themes; the garden, soil, the quiet, blue stillness often referred to as the ‘blue hour’, I presented images of cyanotype flower pressings and shimmery, blue light. I found some mono versions amongst Garima’s brightly coloured textile prints. These whispery, fragile, translucent leaves glowed and shimmered; and Garima didn’t mind my colouring them the blue in my minds eye. It called for fine san serif type – nothing too loud or dominating. A follow-up to ‘Typewriter Music’, the specifications were predetermined but these were perfectly suited. I designed the text with these principles in mind also.
