The design of Flavours of Hong Kong is inspired by the city it celebrates – a juxtapostion of bold, kitschy charm and contemporary aesthetic. The vibrant colour palette is adapted from retro Chinese firework packaging and the pastel colours of high-rise flats, with stylistic elements borrowed from old-school Chinese takeaway menus. The number of fonts and flourishes borders on excessive, reflecting the somewhat haphazard nature of Chinese ephemera and Hong Kong culture. This organised chaos – also captured in Hong Kong illustrator Pearl Law’s energetic, monochromatic sketches – is balanced with lots of white ‘breathing’ space, and a clean, contemporary layout.
