The first consideration for I’ve an Uncle Ivan was to be sympathetic to the mid-century aesthetic of the illustrations. I wanted the reader to feel as though the book was designed in the 1950s, complete with deliberately out-of-register printing, muted colours and coarse halftones. Custom typography for the title uses the same textures as the illustration work and encourages a seamless look. The use of a casual-yet-stylish typeface lead me to settle on a font that hasn’t been used in a children’s book before, yet has a friendly and familiar feel that matches the lilt of the rhyming text.
