Laurinda by Alice Pung is a picaresque YA novel about an Asian girl from the wrong side of the tracks winning a scholarship to an exclusive girls’ school. There is a theme of fabric and sewing through the book – Lucy’s mother slaves over a sewing machine doing piece work at home, and early in the novel threatens to sew Lucy’s uniform herself. And uniforms are a signifier of social order and control.
