About the Designer
Sandy has been designing books for more than 20 years. In 2004 and 2005, she won the Best Designed Book of the Year at the Book Design Awards. In 2011 she was the 7th person to be inducted into the Australian Book Design Hall of Fame. This is a beautiful story and the most difficult cover I’ve ever worked on. The publisher was involved every step of the way with the editor providing invaluable assistance. At their suggestion, I commissioned the book artist Nicholas Jones, giving him the bird shape around which we designed the text. There was continual input about the images within the cut layers, the front cover type and the inclusion of beetles. I shot the endpaper as last minute request. It was decided half way through that both hard and paperback would be published simultaneously.
