Astred is a freelance book designer whose distinctive work for a number of publishing houses covers fiction, non-fiction and educational, with a special emphasis on young adult fiction. The brief was to design an antidote for gross lovey-dovey stuff. Smart and funny and cynical, this book of quotes and the accompanying clever illustrations by Emma Munger inspired me to propose creating individual lettering and layout for each spread, instead of using a rotation of typefaces. I was a little ambitious and it turned out to be a huge undertaking. But the end result was highly satisfying, with the finished work presenting as a collection of stand-alone pieces. – Astred Hicks
