About the Designer

Sandy has been designing books for more than 20 years. In 2004 and 2005, she won the Best Designed Book of the Year at the Book Design Awards. In 2011 she was the 7th person to be inducted into the Australian Book Design Hall of Fame. Design Rationale

Central to this novel about love and grief, was an actual art performance about ‘connection’, by Marina Abromovic, in the atrium of MOMA. The novels characters were either inside a white square participating or looking on from its edge. I had been working with the square from the beginning, but when I made it a cube using the colours of Marina’s three dresses, I chanced upon this ‘connection’, this stunning interplay of light. Just a small leap to make the letters add to its three-dimensionality – it looked embossed and metallic but wasn’t. I had fun with the spine.
