About the Designer

Stuart Geddes is a graphic designer and occasional publisher, mostly of books, and occasionally other kinds of projects (magazines and journals, exhibitions and websites). He also co-publishes/edits/designs/prints motorcycle magazine Head Full of Snakes, and is an industry fellow, researcher and PhD candidate at RMIT University.

Design Rationale

NIRIN is about challenging dominant narratives. We reflected this by embracing different experiences of the book—each of 50 contributions is made as a standalone booklet, and the booklets are collated in various orders so there is no dominant sequence. The design and production of this book also go hand in hand. We bought a 1982 Heidelberg GTO printing press, and learned to use it, to make this book. We wondered: how can we use an industrial process like offset lithography in unusual and poetic ways? How can we use a machine like this like a brush, or a camera?
