- Design Rationale
-
I approached the design with a sense of formality and restraint, feeling the weight of the family’s sorrow and grief. My intention – to create space and dignity for the faded handwritten diary. Smudgy charcoal textures (a reference to the walls in the chimney bunker), enriched black inks, and blacker-than-black endpapers add gravitas. The dual book construction allows the reader to view both texts. Yiddish reads from right to left so, when placed to the right of the English version, the reader can open both books at once. The solid roll-fold case snaps shut with hidden magnets, protecting a legacy.

- Special finishes
- Two section-sewn books are mounted into one laminated hard case with debossed title. The case shuts with a magnetic closure. The two spines are both centred so that the scanned images of the original Yiddish diary (written whilst in hiding during the Holocaust) - which reads right to left - can be viewed at the same time as the edited English translation.
