Margaret Simons’ Six Square Metres is a beautiful, thoughtful and almost meditative memoir. In it, she takes us through the seasons, her life and the happenings in her tiny, urban garden. This is such a special book, I loved it. From memory, I think my initial brief for the illustrations and design may have been something along the lines of, ‘just make the outside as beautiful and special as the inside’. A pretty daunting task, that I’m not sure can actually be achieved in this instance because Margaret’s writing is so wonderful! But I love the size of this book (which was art director Jenny Grigg’s genius suggestion!), I think it’s perfect for the nature of the story, so small and compact like Margaret’s urban garden.
