About the Designer
Sandy has been designing books for more than 20 years. In 2004 and 2005, she won the Best Designed Book of the Year at the Book Design Awards. In 2011 she was the 7th person to be inducted into the Australian Book Design Hall of Fame. Such a title didn’t conjure classic springtime joy. I presented Torkils dark, haunting silhouettes in the first round as an entity on their own. The publisher edited my selection from 8 to 4 and met the budget. The editor and I worked painstakingly on the typesetting to perfect the fall of the tip-ins and to avoid widows, orphans and rivers on such narrow pages. I requested an uncoated text stock, designed that one verdant drop cap and the editor suggested colouring the reverse of the tip-ins to avoid any bright whites jarring the homogenous flow.
