About the Designer
Astred is a freelance book designer whose distinctive work for a number of publishing houses covers fiction, non-fiction and educational, with a special emphasis on young adult fiction. She is a sometime lecturer in graphic design and was the lead author of the popular text for tertiary students, ‘Graphic design {Australian style manual}’. High-visibility Pantone’s strobe at the viewer: WARNING! This non-fiction book will get seriously dangerous, funny and a bit gross. The cover’s introduce mid-grade readers to researched, humorously framed content in a ‘found’ manuscript style, the textured hardcover adds a sensory layer.
Inside, the two colour design continues the ‘found’ manuscript concept as the reader is guided through ‘danger files’, newspaper clippings and post-it notes by an illustrated avatar. The publisher and author encouraged the internal designer/illustrator to have fun illustrating the avatar, which resulted in her occasionally adding her own jokes to emphasis the text.
