The brief was to convey the theme “creepy horror.” Working closely with the cover illustrator, we came up with the concept of a haunted house filled with creepy portraits and a monster in the shadows. The monster is blind printed with spot varnish so it only appears when light hits the cover from certain angles. The creatures in the portraits were peppered throughout the interiors in unexpected places. A challenge was to incorporate the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure and flipbook features. This was addressed by using the same hand-rendered display typeface in a condensed version for CYOA to minimise visual clutter.
