About the Designer
Sandy has been designing books for more than 20 years. In 2004 and 2005, she won the Best Designed Book of the Year at the Book Design Awards. In 2011 she was the 7th person to be inducted into the Australian Book Design Hall of Fame. I’d been wanting to use a work by Katrien de Blauwer for years and immediately thought of her during my reading of ‘The Thinking Woman’. I presented this concept in the first round, with others by Katrien, and several other artists. Most concepts were painterly, and all obscured a woman to varying degrees, illustrating the basic premise of the book, that the voice of prominent women thinkers and philosophers had been ‘missing’. The vintage photo and paint collage, coupled with bold, contemporary type makes a brash and dramatic statement, finally ‘righting’ and re-writing that lack.
