Design Rationale

Australia from prehistory to federation… that’s something you can’t take lightly, but we did. It was hard to find suitable typefaces for a book like this. We wanted a look that had a strong ‘now’ feel and not too serious either. Luckily I got my hands on a pre-release of Blanco by David Foster, which I used with some Colonial-inspired faces and modern type-writer fonts. We chose a bright-orange spot colour and orange endpapers to reference the Australian soil, contrasting with the ocean-blue cover. Being a foreigner to this country, these elements represent Australia for me, without any judgement.
