Design Rationale

This is an Australian coming-of-age story with an unexplained mystery at its heart; 3 girls vanish, 1 comes back. I drew on my own experiences growing up on the edges of suburbia in the 1990s while working on this cover, also referencing similar stories/settings like Jasper Jones and The Virgin Suicides. The final jacket was all about the physical ‘sense memory’ of the Van Apfel sisters themselves … what you see and what you don’t see. Mysterious, sexual and oddly uncomfortable in shades of bronzed Summer skin, with loose tentacles of hair caressing embossed letters on the front and spine.
