Design Rationale

Inspired by a “Type as Image” workshop that I conducted with the 15 editors for this title (all of whom were aged 10 to 12), the approach to this collection of stories treats typography as a graphic device that conveys the meaning of featured words and phrases. To support the exploration theme of the book, I worked with one of the illustrators on a contents page that wasn’t arranged chronologically but “geographically”, as if the book were a landscape ready to be discovered. Elements of the cover illustration were integrated within the interiors along with map-marking symbols.
