Design Rationale

The brief was to showcase the spectacular landscape photography in a way that would create a sense of awe. The design references vintage explorer publications with a scholarly style map of Australia at the beginning, and each chapter opener providing a field-guide type grid. This motif carries through onto the subsequent spreads, but doesn’t detract from the epic nature of the images. The cover uses one of the most dramatic images from the book, that feels untamed and “wild”, while the title runs vertically on the left, over an off-white block that references the quarter-bind of a vintage publication.
