Raoul Moat was the subject of a major police operation after murdering three people. The cover reflects both Hankinson’s approach to the subject and the tabloid news coverage that the case received. The typography presenting the book’s title is designed in red, upper case, sans serif italics to reference sensationalist, newspaper reporting and the image is an actual portrait of Moat as a child. The type, brutally juxtaposed against Moat’s innocent boyhood face poses the question, ‘what went wrong?’. The design is intentionally stark to reflect the subject as well as the author’s contemporary and unconventional approach to non-fiction literature.
