About The Event —
This workshop will combine discussion, critique, and primary-source research in an effort to rethink the formal language of personal identity. We’ll begin by considering authority as a kind of visual grammar—from stamps to selfies, fingerprints to signatures, diplomas to passports to identity cards and Facebook pages—questioning the graphic marks and physical attributes that give these artifacts their fascinating and arguably enduring power.
This will lead into discussions around, Jessica’s latest book, Design: The Invention of Desire which makes a strong case for asking critical questions about the things we think about, but don’t talk about enough. Can design mislead by conveying false authority? How do the things we make result in unintended consequences? And in an age that privileges crowdsourcing and transparency, how do we reconcile need against greed—personal voice against public choice?
Design is recognized as a decisive advantage in countless industries and a boon to innovation in all fields. But what is design, really? Is it a process or a practice? A product or a platform? And if, arguably, it defies such easy classification, then who wants and needs it, produces and consumes it?
