Design Rationale

A girl’s coming-of-age story in rural Ireland. Its spiky, fractured syntax is utterly unconventional. It begins: For you. You’ll soon. You’ll give her name. In the stitches of her skin she’ll wear your say . . . The cover drawing attempts to embody both the title and the strangeness and intensity of the prose, and acknowledging its difficulty, while avoiding the pitfalls of the story’s tragic trajectory. The pages were designed to deliver the writing’s extreme formal qualities with classic restraint. (The book went on to win the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction 2014.)
