The large format was chosen to fit in the text and to maximise the highly detailed illustrations. The research was done over fifteen years—its historical accuracy has now been commended by historians and archaeologists. All objects and buildings are in correct scale. For the human figures I photographed individual poses, then drew them in correct style and costume. Drawings were transferred into Illustrator and Photoshop. Fonts were modified to match their 19th century equivalents and original records were scanned for a period patina.
