About the Designer

Robyn started work as an Industrial Designer in Sydney in the mid 1970s. After accepting the position of tertiary Fine Art and Design teacher she became primarily an exhibiting visual artist and educator. Her main disciplines, painting, drawing and design, influence her sometimes unorthodox approach to layout and visual content. Robyn currently concentrates on her studio practice and on various illustration and design opportunities. She is based near Sydney in the Southern Highlands, NSW.

Design Rationale

Ancient Australia Unearthed needed to appeal to both Year 7 students and teachers as well as cater to a range of learner styles and abilities. A tight budget, meant the book was to be compact and inexpensive. Unlike most textbooks, the publisher stipulated that the focus of the book must be on images rather than text. Hand-drawn graphics and illustrations added to the desired ‘scrapbook’ appearance. I was free to use as many illustrations as I wished and to apply any style of layout. I treated each spread as an individual artwork and gave special attention to the book’s tactility.
