All of these fictions are thematically linked by their references to traditional storytelling, daily life in Indonesia,, and the role of women. The design of the book was inspired by the taboos, inversions, sex, death, forbidden relationships and the sense of a soupy other world stewing beneath the surface of normal life featured in Intan’s stories. For the cover, the combination of tension in the twisted female wrist and arm contrasted with the bulbous goop enclosed in the hand conjures / invokes the often unsettling themes of these stories without relying on the obvious connotations of the book’s title.
