About the Designer
Allison Colpoys is an award-winning designer and illustrator, and the Art Director at Scribe Publications. Her picture books include The Underwater Fancy-dress Parade, Under the Love Umbrella, If All the World Were… and All the Ways To Be Smart. As well as receiving numerous Australian Book Design Awards for her illustration and cover design, she has won the CBCA Crichton Award for Best New Talent and two Australian Book Industry Awards.

This novel is structured like the rings of a tree, as it moves from the future to the present to the past, and back again. I wanted to show a tree cross section on the front to represent this unique structure. I mirrored this motif on the back with a hand to indicate human intervention of the natural world. Because this book is set both in the past and present, I used textures and type to give it a historical feel and paired them with a fluoro green pantone, and metallic green foil as a nod to the future.
