The challenge with Lottie and Walter was to explore fear, in a way that was not overwhelming for children. White space was used and a focus given to the inky textures of the water to soften the arrival of the shark, giving the imagery a dream like feel. Wrapping Walter around the cover was a way of introducing of Lottie’s imaginary friend and show his large scale. Using Walter’s voice as handwritten text conveyed his amusing and friendly voice to reassure Lottie and the reader. The endpapers begin with dark watery textures and end with patches of light.
