Design Rationale

Challenged to depict a slant on media, technology, and society without actually showing any of the three (to avoid the design dating too quickly), I looked to use already dated technology and media. The book itself was treated as a form of technology. The initial image of Marilyn Monroe appears obscured by the “No signal” symbol, and blurs when when turning the cover representing “buffering”, by the third spread the image has “loaded” and Marilyn is shown in full clarity. Marilyn Monroe was selected for her; instant recognition, timelessness, and depiction of someone who had been impacted by the media.
