Making readability, storytelling, and emotional connection our primary concerns, a design aesthetic was developed that would meet these goals without impinging on the illustrative qualities of the book. The book is set in Eames Century Modern, a slab-serif font that acknowledges the modernist-era design influences of the book, yet still feels contemporary in look. We created chains of illustrations that guide the reader over multiple pictures per spread, putting the white space to work. Furthermore, various sized illustrations are used throughout, to allow the reader time to reflect on the story and give the narrative space to breath.
