Design Rationale

Rhyme Cordial is a toddler-board book take on absurdist wordplay, in which each seemingly straightforward spread lifts to reveal a surreal rhyming switch in words and illustrations. Antonia Pesenti’s idea for the book arrived almost fully formed; the rhyming swaps were established, but not the way to physically execute the concept. We tried page layouts, sizes, and specifications to get the right result before settling on an oversized boardbook with full-page flaps. The market in Australia for locally originated concept board-books, which are traditionally low-cost items, is relatively untested. We were attempting to enhance the perception of their value.
