Scary Bird is a fable about immigration and fear of the unknown, and tells the story of a strange new bird arriving in an aviary. The interaction of the birds worked best along the length of a perch, and called for a landscape format. The cover design took visual cues from warning signs – yellow and black. The ‘scary’ character is visually different from the other birds, with a more angular form, and we mimicked this contrast with an angular cover type and pull-out font. The type is reminiscent of the linework throughout, and bird tracks featured in the endpapers.
