I prefer conceptual design to literal depiction. However this book uses both. Based on this scene: main character punished by the cult she has been lured into. Tortured with isolation, her only company is a single light bulb. The illustrated bulb conveys the scene’s pathos. There is loneliness and apprehensiveness but also a glimmer of hope – light in the dark. Keeping the style simple and a little rough, illustrations and hand-drawn type characterise the fallible human aspect of the story. Colour pallet is limited; pantone neon yellow enhances the isolated queasy feeling while creating a strobe effect for bookshelves.
