The publisher suggested looking at available reportage photography showing the type of events this book documents. Rather than pursuing a photographic direction however, I illustrated, quite literally, the pivotal event in the book, in a stylised way so that you won’t realise this until you read it.
Murat Idrissi is a refugee who is smuggled in the boot of a car by the protagonists and he suffocates. I wanted to draw something appropriately powerful and sad that didn’t turn people away, but rather, drew them in.
