-
The publisher’s brief for this novel required a cover that sensitively communicates issues of love and betrayal in the cultural setting of Kabul in an attractive modern package. The star-filled night sky was the suitable backdrop to the interweaving pomegranates and canary, symbolic of both the Afghan setting and the protagonist. I worked up several concepts including the city skyline, but ultimately the mountain ranges and highly decorative middle-eastern frame gives the cover richness and context. Featuring illustration rather than photography made this cover more intimate, with strong calligraphic-style typography offsetting the femininity of the foliage.
