About the Designer
Astred is a freelance book designer whose distinctive work for a number of publishing houses covers fiction, non-fiction and educational, with a special emphasis on young adult fiction. She is a sometime lecturer in graphic design and was the lead author of the popular text for tertiary students, ‘Graphic design {Australian style manual}’. What exactly does dematerialising in a teleporter look like? Inspired by sculptural modern art I wanted to capture the feeling of tumbling through fantastic, futuristic travel devices. I challenged my Photoshop skills further than ever before, creating every element (bar the models and typefaces) from scratch. Fabricating brushes, I was able to layer key emblems of the Venn diagram, letter Q and eternity symbol on the respective covers, with liquid movement exploding into fractal pieces dispersing into glowing mist. It was gratifying that the author told me that mine were his favourite covers out of all the international editions.
