Design Rationale

Jessica’s collection of personal essays details her journey through postpartum depression and the slow, complex process of reassembling what it fractured. I was lucky to be provided with the outtakes from a photoshoot Jessica had with photographer Heather Lighton to use on the front cover. They were so beautiful and after reading the manuscript I thought I would like to try to create a collage from the images to create a sense of tension and fracture. The first essay centers around the Maribyrnong river, which is why I chose the river water motif to tie the collage together.
