About the Designer
Sandy has been designing books for more than 20 years. In 2004 and 2005, she won the Best Designed Book of the Year at the Book Design Awards. In 2011 she was the 7th person to be inducted into the Australian Book Design Hall of Fame. Sandy was a founding ABDA committee member, has been a guest speaker at writers’ festivals and an occasional guest lecturer on book design at secondary and tertiary level. A five-book, interconnected novella series released over five consecutive months, this project was audacious. The small format, determined by the author, challenged the marketing team, who preferred a conventional format with a minimum spine width. I found the US cover artist, and matched specific images to titles. They form one continuous, connected landscape when all beside one another, and the internal design of each also refers to its own place in the whole. The last feeds into the first to compliment the circular connected narrative. I also designed a salamander box which didn’t happen.
