Meet Your Judges — The Australian Book Design Awards 2018
The ABDA committee is pleased to announce the judges of the 2018 awards. With experience across a wide range of publishing, design, academic and media platforms, we’re thrilled to have them on board to uncover the best and brightest, most original and beautiful designs of the last year.
CORALIE BICKFORD-SMITH is a designer at Penguin Books. Her book covers have been recognised by the AIGA in the United States and D&AD in the UK. Her work on the clothbound series with Penguin Classics attracted worldwide attention and harks back to the world of Victorian book bindings. Her debut book, The Fox and the Star, was named Waterstones Book of the Year 2015 and was one of Time Out’s 100 Best Children’s Books of All Time.
ALEX ROSS is Head of Creative at Penguin Random House Australia. He became a designer by accident sometime around the turn of the century. He started out working in advertising, which was intentional, and then came to publishing, which was another accident. He joined Penguin in 2009 and served as ABDA’s inaugural President from 2014 to 2015.
KASIA GADECKI is a multidisciplinary freelance designer and art director, with over 10 years experience. She has a particular interest in surface graphics, packaging design and 3D installations. She also co-runs a small stationery brand, The Souvenir Society, with Allison Colpoys – a project conceived through a shared love of pattern, colour, texture, 3D, and furoshiki. She is also very fascinated by the human psyche which has inspired her to undertake a degree in psychology.
ANDREA McNAMARA is a publishing consultant with 20 years’ experience in the trade, including Penguin Random House and Allen & Unwin. She has published many commercial non-fiction bestsellers in genres ranging from memoir, sport, health and wellbeing to outback, animal stories, humour and true crime. She now works with authors and brands to bring their stories to the widest possible audience.
WARREN TAYLOR is a graphic designer and lecturer in communication design at MADA (Monash Art Design and Architecture). He is the founder of The Narrows, an occasional contributor to IDEA Magazine and part of the editorial and design collective Re:collection. He has designed publications for artists such as Jon Campbell, Matt Hinkley, Bianca Hester and Elizabeth Newman, as well as initiating a series of print workshops as a platform for artists and designers to connect through the medium of print.
SUZY TUXEN is the Creative Director and Founder of A Friend of Mine Design Studio. After graduating with a BA in Communication Design from RMIT in 2003, Suzy cut her teeth for several years at Studio Round in Melbourne. She then spent two years in London working for multidisciplinary design studio Multistorey. In 2009, she moved home and set up her own practice, A Friend of Mind. Now a small team of four, instead of having a distinctive ‘house style’ AFOM prefers to keep project designs varied, which allows them to be continuously curious and engaged with the creative process.
ANDY WARREN is a Melbourne based print designer. After graduating from RMIT in 2013, Andy interned then eventually worked as a designer at Hardie Grant Books for three years. Working across a range of non-fiction titles, the work produced here led Andy to be awarded Young Designer of the Year in 2017. Andy is currently working as Senior Designer at Bonnier Publishing Australia, working across the Five Mile Press imprint.
