About the Designer
Debra has been designing books since Roxette had ‘The Look’. She spent her early career creating products for children as an art director and studio manager, until landing her dream job at Penguin Books. For almost a decade, this saw her working across all genres with some of Australia’s highest profile authors, until starting her own business from her Melbourne home-studio in 2007. Whilst having designed everything from children’s board books to cookbooks, Debra’s true love is creating fiction covers…

-
Tjanara Goreng Goreng, the author, painted the black and red image which forms the base of the cover. Mandy Braddick of Wojamin Designs created the basic layout of the text, and Debra Billson completed the cover stylistically. The three black circles on the cover represent the three Indigenous women most important in Tjanara’s life. The black represents Tjanara and the First Nations people to whom she belongs; the red symbolises the earth on which Tjanara was born. Contrasting colours symbolise the connection between traditional and contemporary storytelling; the simple, striking and balanced design symbolises eventual harmony.
