Blueberries is both memoir and an interrogation of memoir, reflecting on what it means to be a woman, a body, an artist. It defies easy categorisation, as does the abstract cover imagery, which has a bodily feel but hints at blueberries (a symbol of privilege in the title essay). The tunnel-like forms are suggestive of looking inward, as are the frames. The spare, elegant and fluid writing style is reflected in the cover’s aesthetic, with textures and uncoated stock adding warmth and intimacy. It was a design challenge to maintain the same aesthetic internally, given the complexity of the pieces.
