Happy Hippo is about self-acceptance as Hippo thinks he is rather plain and wants to be fancy like the other animals.
I chose a hand-lettered font to complement Charles’s artwork and represented each of the animals by applying their coat to the letters in the title. With Hippo’s new self-accepted, blingy self in the silver foil ‘HAPPY’ and the other animals textures to the letters in ‘HIPPO’.
The internal fonts were chosen to give a classic picture book feel using pull-out words and movement in the text to ensure the storytelling flows well on each page and create some drama.

- The cover has a matt varnish finish and is further embellished with a silver foil over ‘Happy’ in the title reflecting the grey colouring of the Hippo with a blingy twist! The cover background is made up of Pantone Neon Green which represents the magical turtle in the story, bookended with the turtle shell patterned endpapers. All these elements alongside the textures in ‘HIPPO’ represent all the animals in the book.
