About the Designer
Astred is a freelance book designer whose distinctive work for a number of publishing houses covers fiction, non-fiction and educational, with a special emphasis on young adult fiction. She is a sometime lecturer in graphic design and was the lead author of the popular text for tertiary students, ‘Graphic design {Australian style manual}’. To manifest flight and fight I broke my cardinal typographic rule – no vertical type. On HIVE my handmade title letters serve a dual purpose, forming the body of the worker bee as she flies upwards and away from her water prison, while reading downwards and pulling her in the opposite direction. On ROGUE the title is surrounded by unforgiving nature, binding and imprisoning her. Backgrounds undulate, salty water and salty blood pressing upwards towards the foiled wings and leaf pattern as they take flight. My intention was to create an engaging covers that were better understood after finishing the
