I was asked for an iconic jacket: something different, memorable, that would ‘pop’. The figure was created by taking a photo of a girl the same age as the main character, then drawing over the silhouette in Photoshop. The hair and boots were emphasised with pops of red, as they lend themselves to iconic status. Within the figure is the text ‘In here, Mum’, a key element of the story. The hand-drawn nature of the cover is appealing in its naivety. Aspects of this cover have been used in US and UK editions while other territories have commissioned this design.
